DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Thousands of flights have been cancelled to and from Florida as airlines prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Irma, which is expected to hit the U.S. mainland on Sunday.
North Texas-based carriers American and Southwest Airlines are urging passengers to check their websites for flight information and customer accommodation policies.
Alex Ramsey, owner of All Aboard Travel in Dallas, said travelers should write a detailed list of cancellations they need to make and start calling immediately.
“Document who you talk to and exactly what they said so that you can get a refund on your money if at all possible,” she said.
Ramsey said it’s best to start with the airlines first because it’s typically more difficult to get your money back from them.
“When there’s really a disaster like this, they usually come around. But, as everyone who has ever traveled knows, the airlines are the most difficult. I would go after them first and start documenting,” she said.
Some carriers offered special rates to passengers trying to evacuate Florida. American Airlines announced on Wednesday that it was offering $99 flights out of Florida for a limited time.
Hotels and car rentals, according to Ramsey, are easier to deal with when it comes to making changes or getting refunds.
“Especially your more reputable hotels. Obviously, they want to maintain their reputation. The better tour operators are going to be,” she said.
Its a stressful process trying to get things in order when your travel plans are disrupted by a natural disaster but Ramsey said it’s important not to get discouraged.
“Don’t give up if you’ve been told once no call back the next day,” she said.
