Religious Groups Urge Rejection of “Bathroom Bill”

Austin (WBAP/KLIF News) – Religious groups are calling on Texas lawmakers to reject restrictions on transgender bathroom use. The Texas Senate has passed two bills on transgender bathrooms, but the House has not taken any action.

Opponents of the bills gathered outside the Texas Capitol Tuesday morning.

“Don’t be fooled by the lies and the hate being told inside,” says Baptist Minister Griff Martin. “All of us Baptists don’t think alike.”

The group cited a survey by an advocacy group that says 75 percent of transgender students have said they feel unsafe at school.

“Bathroom bills make vulnerable people, men, women and children, more vulnerable,” says Rabbi Mara Nathan.

Others said supporters of the bill are not following the teaching of Jesus.

“We are the ones who try to put definitions on the word, ‘neighbor,'” says Presbyterian minister Sally Watson. “Jesus put no restrictions on the word, neighbor.”

Supporters of the bill plan a separate rally Thursday morning.
