Ft. Worth (WBAP/KLIF News) – A hot dog stand in Fort Worth hosted its seventh annual Nathan’s hot dog eating contest to mark Independence Day. Curly’s Frozen Custard was the first location outside of Coney Island to host a contest approved by Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs.
“I never dreamed it would become like this and become ingrained in Ft. Worth,” says owner Bourke Harvey.
About 25 people signed up to participate in youth and adult contests. Harvey says Nathan’s gave its approval in exchange for his contest working differently than others. Curly’s asks adults to eat four hot dogs as quickly as possible instead of giving them a fixed amount of time to eat as many as they can.
“They said, ‘That’s our gig, why don’t you just dial it back a bit?'” Harvey says. “I said, ‘Sure, that’s no problem.”
Isaac Rodriguez won a youth competition, eating one hot dog in :52 seconds. Daniel Mak won the adult competition, eating four hot dogs with their bun in 2:50.
“What slowed me down was the hot dogs, they were really hot,” he says. “Really hot and fresh hot dogs become a challenge when you’re trying to eat fast.”
Mak won tickets to a Rangers game.
