SAN ANTONIO  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Two San Antonio police officers were shot Thursday afternoon while on patrol near the downtown district.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the officers stopped two people walking down the street. He said the two allegedly opened fire when the officers got out of their car.

The officers returned fire and hit one suspect but were both critically wounded. McManus said one officer was shot in the head, the other in the torso.

“Both officers right now, the latest report that we have is that they’re both very critical,” he said.

San Antonio College is located near the incident and was briefly placed on lock down. McManus said that the community is not in any further danger because both suspects had been captured.

“One was down. One was in custody immediately. So, there was no further danger than what occurred during that immediate time when the shooting was happening,” he said.

Both officers, whose names have not been released, have been with the San Antonio Police Department for nine years.
