Bedford Citizens Concerned About Police Department’s Handling of Kaytlynn Cargill’s Death

Bedford (WBAP/KLIF News) – Some citizens of Bedford have voiced their concerns after they were told by police last week they have “nothing to worry about” after a 14-year-old was found dead in a nearby landfill.

Kaytlynn Cargill’s body was found in an Arlington landfill last Thursday.

She vanished while walking her dog near The Oak Creek Apartments last Monday.

Chyrstal Riddell, the mother of a 13 and 9-year-old, said the news of Katylynn’s death was shocking and she was caught off guard by the police department’s handling of this case.

“There were too many holes in the story. They’re not concerned enough at this point still. They said they didn’t believe she was in any danger and she ended up in a landfill. Now, they’re saying we have no reason to worry. We have plenty of reason to worry,” she said.

Bedford police said the medical examiner’s office has not provided a cause of death yet. They said an Amber Alert wasn’t issued when Katylynn went missing because her disappearance didn’t meet the proper state and federal criteria.

Riddell said the police could have done more.

“Our school district regularly sends out robocalls for anything from registration to a party coming up to a meeting. I got nothing from the school district. They could have sent out a robocall to 25,000 students in our community letting us know this happened,” she said.

The department said they posted information about Katylynn’s disappearance to Facebook but it was 18 hours after the report. Riddell said the news came way too late.

“I am trying to measure my words carefully because I do believe in The Bedford Police Department. I don’t think that they have handled this the right way and I do think they missed the mark,” she said.
