Two former Dallas City Council members were welcomed back and two new members were introduced at Monday’s inauguration ceremony.
Mayor Mike Rawlings encouraged teamwork moving forward.
“This may be the beginning of a long and prosperous political career,” Mayor Rawlings said. “But let’s remember the wisdom of the old adage, if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
Dwaine Carraway and Tennell Atkins both return to the council. Kevin Felder and Omar Narvaez took the Oath of Office for the first time.
Rawlings gave his vision for the city during the ceremony. He referred to a rise in what he called ‘boogeyman politics’ regarding Texas’ hot button issues, the Sanctuary Cities Bill and the the Bathroom Bill.
“Danger doesn’t lurk in our public restrooms,” Rawlings said. “Our Latino brothers and sisters are not criminals. Our Police Officers have more important things to do than acting as immigration agents.”
Rawlings said he is worried about Texas politicians shaping the views of their districts. He said the City Council must reject division and fear that is being carried out by leaders at the state and national level.
