First responders are asking North Texans to protect themselves from the summer heat this weekend.
The weather forecast indicates the hottest days of the year so far will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Assistant Director of Operations for Medstar, Matt Zavadsky says the most common heat related illness is heat exhaustion.
“That’s the person who has been out in the heat and becomes sweaty, fatigued, nauseous, and maybe some vomiting,” Zavadksy said.
He recommends protecting your skin from the sun, staying hydrated, and making frequent trips indoors when possible to avoid a heat related illness. The number of emergency calls in response to heat related issues is expected to increase this weekend.
“What we anticipate to see with the heat is an average of three to five calls per day,” Zavadsky said. “When we’ve only been averaging about half to one call related to heat over the past few days.”
Temperatures could reach as high as 95 degrees this weekend with heat index values even higher.
