Governor Signs Bill Cutting License to Carry Fee

Austin (WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott has signed a bill that cuts the cost for a license to carry a gun. The governor signed the bill at a gun range in Austin Friday.

“The right to bear arms is something that is synonymous with the state of Texas,” he said.

Abbott fired several rounds at the gun range. When he looked at the target sheet, he said, “I’m going to carry this around in case I see any reporters.”

Senate Bill 16 cuts the fee for a license to carry a gun from $140 to $40 for first time licensees and $70 to $40 for renewals. The law takes effect September 1.

The author of the measure says the fee covers the cost of background checks and the Department of Public Safety’s cost to run the program.
