Dallas First Responders Train for Drowning Cases Ahead of Summer

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Dallas first responders got a head start on preparing for a common cause of death over the summer.

The Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center says drowning is the No.2 cause of accidental death among kids and No. 3 among adults. As a result, they hosted free training throughout the week to educate Dallas Police officers and other child services on how to best handle those cases.

“To not only do what we need to when maybe there’s justice required for that child,” said Diana Smoot of DCAC. “But then also when it’s an accident, how are we maybe getting in front of that?”

Smoot says many times drowning investigations happen too late, inviting the possibility of critical evidence disappearing.

“Whether they are accidental or not, those cases are coming to us,” Smoot said. “So that’s something we have to be concerned about throughout the year — making sure that our investigators have all the information they need so we can really look into these cases.”
