DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — A bill that would officially recognize May as “Fallen First Responders Month” has been filed to the Texas House.
Courtesy: Texas LODD Task ForceThe Texas LODD Task Force is already recognizing the month, encouraging people to wear purple next Thursday, May 11 to honor those who have died in the line of duty.
“When one of these individuals gets critically injured or dies in the line of duty, they leave this huge wake of grief and sadness,” said Wendy Norris, who is with the task force.
Norris said the idea is in good faith, but the timing is unfortunate, given the fact that a Dallas paramedic was shot and critically injured in the line of duty earlier this week.
“Unfortunately he is one of the perfect examples of why we really want to push this out and make the community aware that these are normal men and women who go out and protect them, protect their communities and are willing to die for them,” Norris said.
She adds even though the bill won’t be read on the House floor until next week, the organization has been recognizing fallen first responders for years now.
The bill was filed by Representative Larry Gonzales out of Round Rock.
“We’ve really just wanted to get the word out to the community about what it really means to get up in the morning, put on a uniform, and be willing to go out there and protect the community,” Norris said. “With that knowing that you may not come home.”
