IRVING (WBAP/KLIF News) — Firefighters in Irving had to fight more than just a four-alarm fire early Friday morning.
The fire happened at the Crossings on Walnut Hill apartment complex and caused the second floor of the building to completely collapse. But what made things even more difficult for the Irving Fire Department were the 40+ MPH winds.
“When you get this type of magnanimous wind volume that comes through, it’s very unpredictable,” said assistant fire chief J. Taylor.
Taylor praised the department for still being able to contain the fire in less than an hour. It started just before midnight, and Taylor said they were able to contain it by 12:40 am.
Thirty-two people were displaced by the fire — 21 of them were from the building that caught fire, and the other 11 were from the adjoining building that received water damage. Nobody was injured.
“It was an extremely challenging situation,” Taylor said. “For our crews tonight to get there and contain it to the initial fire building and protect the very close, adjacent building was really a magnificent job by them.”
