Dallas to Consider ID Cards for Undocumented Immigrants

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas will consider a program that would provide undocumented immigrants with identification. The program would provide photo identification to all residents.

“The city is majority-minority,” says Councilwoman Monica Alonzo. “We want to make sure we talk about how we consider how we can be as inclusive as we can to all people living in the City of Dallas.”

Cities started offering photo identification to residents ten years ago. New York, Los Angeles and Washington DC currently offer similar programs.

Alonzo says photo identification would help people set up bank accounts, library cards and help people identify themselves to police.

“We welcome everyone. We want to make sure everyone knows we are here to serve,” she says.

Dallas has already created an Office of Welcoming Communities and Immigrant Affairs. The city hired a director and is now reaching out to community groups to define the office’s mission.
