Big XII Punishes Baylor Amid Scandals

IRVING (WBAP & KLIF News) — Baylor University will be taking a financial hit for as long as it takes to get a third party to investigate how the school governs its athletics department.

The Big XII Conferecne’s board of directors unanimously voted Wednesday to withhold from Baylor 25 percent of all future revenue payments.

Baylor did not take part in the vote.

“By taking these actions, the Board desires to ensure that the changes that were promised are actually made and that systems are in place to avoid future problems,” board chairmen David Boren said in a statement. “The proportional withholding of revenue distribution payments will be in effect until the Board has determined that Baylor is in compliance with Conference bylaws and regulations as well as all components of Title IX.”

The school has been buried in lawsuits over the last few years alleging football coaches and school administrators of looking the other way while its athletes were accused of sexual assault. Former head coach Art Briles was fired in May of 2016. Baylor also at the time removed Ken Starr as president, and suspended athletic director Ian McCaw, who eventually stepped down.

A lawsuit filed late last month alleged 31 football players of 52 rapes in a four-year period. Soon after that lawsuit was filed, Briles dropped his lawsuit against Baylor.
