AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) — Emboldened by President Trump’s election Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday he will work with lawmakers to create legislation to “remove from office any officeholder who promotes sanctuary cities”.
Last Friday Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez announced that her department would not cooperate with federal ICE authorities when they request inmates be flagged for possible deportation. In an interview with Fox News Abbott vowed to remove Hernandez from office if she follows through on the threat.
WFAA reports the form of any developing legislation it isn’t yet known nor how it would empower the governor to remove an officeholder. Abbott is a stern opponent of so-called sanctuary cities and believes elected officials who support them violate their oaths of office.
Abbott is expected to make the proposal a priority when he delievers his annual state of the state address Tuesday.
Hernandez has not yet commented on the governor’s statement.
