Denton (WBAP/KLIF News) – Denton Police say the woman who was beaten and stomped in the parking lot of the Salvation Army shelter on McKinney Street the morning of October 27th died.
Jessica Yankow was taken to the Denton Regional Medical Clinic after the attack, but was pronounced dead this morning, according to a Denton PD press release.
The suspect in the case, William Stevens, was caught shortly after the attack, and booked into the Denton County Jail on a charge of Aggravated Assault. That charge has since been upgraded to Murder.
Police said the attack was witnessed by a security guard who saw Stevens allegedly standing over Yankow, stomping on her head and neck.
Major John Rich with the Salvation Army said the guard wasn’t armed, so he couldn’t do anything other than yell at Stevens. Additionally, their security camera probably would have caught the attack, but it wasn’t working.
“We discovered that our security camera wasn’t working as it should have, so we were able to step that up to help the police in their investigation,” said Rich.
Rich said they would discuss changes that need to be made with their security company, but he wouldn’t say whether guards would be armed in the future.
