DALLAS –Police in some Texas cities are confirming that the number of crimes being committed with BB guns or fake guns is going up.
Authorities believe the increase is due to criminals having incorrect information. Many believe if they’re caught committing a crime with a fake gun, they’ll avoid the severe punishment that can come with illegally possessing a real one.
Suspects are telling officers they can buy a fake gun for as little as $25 dollars and there is no background check.
In Texas, if a victim of a crime believes a gun pointed at them is real, that’s enough to warrant a first-degree felony charge. That charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
