She Goes Tent to Tent in Tent City

HOMELESS 1DALLAS – Cindy Crain the leader of Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance goes from tent to tent in Tent City, “closing deals.”  She knows the two hundred homeless living in tents under Interstate 45 by name, and she knows exactly what each needs to get them into some sort of housing.  “For some, they need a little money to clear up court fines, so we can put them on a bus to go back to their mothers house.  For some, we need to get them into a detox facility.  For some,  who have jobs, we just need to help them with first and last months rent, so they can get an apartment. Some just need a ride to the DMV so they can get an ID.   It’s a case by case basis.”  The city of Dallas wants everyone out of Tent City by the first week of May.  Crain says it would inhumane and self defeating to bulldoze the area before giving people an opportunity at stable housing.  She is no stranger to homelessness in North Texas.  Before taking the helm at Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance, she served in a similar capacity in Tarrant County.
