DALLAS – Rep. Michael Burgess is urging American athletes to skip the upcoming Olympics in Brazil because of the Zika virus. Burgess, who is also an OBGYN says, “The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes, and there is an outbreak in Brazil. So far there are no mosquitoes here, so people ask me my advice about Zika. Don’t go where it is.” Burgess says he’s shared his concerns with the State Department, who told him it is an issue for the Centers for Disease Control. He says he’s frustrated because the CDC told him it’s a State Department issue. Olympic organizers say U.S. athletes will be educated on the Zika virus, and will be given condoms, deet and mosquito screens.
