ROWLETT (WBAP/KLIF News) Police in Rowlett are defending “The Blue” after a rally for Black History Month spawned a “black lives matter” protest at Coyle Middle School Friday. Participants displayed anti-police signs. Rowlett Police Chief William Broadnax he supports all groups, but has an issue with the signs that he says are untrue. Some of the signs said “I’m choking” and “Hands up, don’t shoot.” They refer to the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Brown died in Ferguson, Missouri after a scuffle with a police officer that resulted in the officer firing his weapon. Garner died of a heart attack after fighting with a New York City officer. Chief Broadnax wants less focus on white vs. black and more to be put on the truth, which he says is the fact that both Brown and Garner resisted arrest just before their deaths.
