White Christmas Leads to Traffic Headaches

DALLAS (WBAP 24/7 News) – A picturesque White Christmas meant traffic headaches for North Texans trying to return home from their Christmas celebrations.

Most of the Metroplex saw between one and two inches of snow Tuesday afternoon. But as the afternoon wore on, the temperature dropped to the freezing mark and below, meaning many overpasses and bridges became icy and dangerous.

Hundreds of wrecks were reported from West Fort Worth to North Dallas. Several of the accidents involved cars running into first responder vehicles.

There are no reports of serious injuries.

WBAP’s chief meteorologist Brad Barton says temperatures will end up between 18-22 degrees overnight, with wind chills in the single digits and a brisk northwest wind, gusting as high is 30 miles an hour.

TexDOT crews are fanned out across the area, treating the roadways with de-icing material, but officials warn drivers to stay at home if at all possible.

D/FW Airport says it canceled 415 flights on Christmas day because of the weather.
