NBA Star Offers to Pay for Atatiana Jefferson’s Funeral

Harrison Barnes

(WBAP/KLIF) – A former Dallas Mavericks star is giving back to the family of the woman shot and killed by a Fort Worth Police Officer this month in her family’s home.
Harrison Barnes, who now plays for the Sacramento Kings, offered to pay nearly all the expenses for Atatiana Jefferson’s funeral. Barnes said he wanted to help out anyway he could.

“Anytime someone has to go through that the last thing you want to have to worry about is trying to come up with the money for the funeral,” said Barnes. “It’s about the family and everything they’re going through. Our prayers our with them and it’s a gesture my wife and I wanted to do for them.”

According to Fort Worth Police, former Officer Aaron Dean was responding to an “open door call” at Jefferson’s family home when he saw movement through a window and fatally shot Jefferson. He was later fired and charged with her Murder.

According to Barnes, he was not only affected by Jefferson’s death but also the Dallas murder of his friend and former NBA player Andre Emmett.

“When you see these situations continue to occur you know that change needs to happen,” Barnes said.

Philadelphia Eagles player Malik Jackson is also chipping in to pay for Jefferson’s funeral. The service is scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Dallas.
