MCKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF) – Collin College will soon offer four-year degrees for its students.
According to Collin College, the school received preliminary notification this week that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges Board of Trustees approved the college’s level change application from a Level I Institution, granting two-year degrees, to a Level II Institution, granting four-year degrees.
The level change includes the approval of Collin’s first two baccalaureate degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Applied Technology in cybersecurity.
“As of January 2020, Collin College will begin offering selected baccalaureate degrees,” said District President Dr. Neil Matkin. “This is an amazing new chapter for the college and the culmination of a tremendous amount of work from many dedicated people.”
In 2017, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 2118 into law, authorizing certain public community colleges to offer up to three baccalaureate degrees. Matkin said plans for a third baccalaureate program at Collin College are in development and will be announced at a later date.
“Although we are now approved to grant four-year degrees, we will remain a community college,” he said. “Senate Bill 2118 was specifically designed to help community colleges address critical workforce shortages in high-demand fields in Texas.”
Collin College serves more than 55,000 credit and continuing education students annually.
