Texas House Committee Reviewing 2015 Case of Sandra Bland

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas lawmakers are looking into whether or not evidence was withheld in the controversial 2015 arrest of a black woman by a white Texas State Trooper.

Video of Sandra Bland’s arrest went viral. The state Trooper who pulled her over is seen yelling at her to get out of the car. Days after her arrest, Bland died in her jail cell of an apparent suicide. The Trooper was highly criticized for the way he treated Bland during the traffic stop. The story prompted an outcry from many activists in the African-American community.
Earlier this month, video of the confrontation from Bland’s cell phone was released. Accusations that authorities withheld the video then surfaced. A claim, lawyers for Texas DPS denied at a Texas House Committee meeting Friday.
“The video was provided to counsel for Ms. Bland’s family by attorney’s representing Waller County,” said Attorney Phillip Atkins. “This occurred on October 30, 2015.”
The committee said Friday it will continue to review the case.
