Cornyn Launches the ‘Stop Beto Fund’

Senator John Cornyn

Fort Worth (WBAP/KLIF) – U.S. Senator John Cornyn, who is up for re-election in 2020, sent a letter to supporters Wednesday saying, “We need to be ready anything,” referring to a possible challenge from former Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

Speaking to reporters in Fort Worth on Friday, Cornyn said, “O’Rourke’s Senate bid against fellow Texan U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz last year was “closer than many people would have thought.”

“He captured people’s imaginations and came very close to winning,” Cornyn said. “It only makes sense … that candidates running in 2020 learn from that.”

“That’s why we’ve started a STOP BETO FUND… and that’s why I need you to chip in as soon as possible.”

The announcement was made in a letter to donors Wednesday. Donor have the opportunity to click on a link to be taken to the Senator’s re-election fund.

Meantime, O’Rourke is expected to formally announce his intentions by month’s end on whether or not he’ll enter the race for the White House.  He has also signaled that he’d be open to being 2nd on the Democratic presidential ticket; and that he may seek to unseat Cornyn in 2020.
