Poor Air Quality Leads to New TxDOT Clean Air Campaign

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Poor air quality in North Texas has TxDOT telling drivers to take action.

TxDOT is launching its “Drive Clean Texas” campaign to help move the Metroplex out of a classification that says its air quality does not meet federal standards.

“Summer’s just now beginning, and when slow wind speeds and hot sunny days become an everyday thing, that makes the conditions perfect for ground level ozone,” said TxDOT’s Ryan LaFontaine. “That’s aided by vehicle emissions.”

The DFW Metroplex joins Houston/Galveston and El Paso in the federal categorization of having lower-than-standard air quality. Six other regions, including Austin and San Antonio, are classified as nearly being at that point.

TxDOT is offering tips to drivers to help pull North Texas out of that category and clean up the air.

“Keep your vehicle well maintained, your tire pressure inflated to the recommended levels,” LaFontaine said. “Properly fill your vehicle, tightly seal the gas cap. Drive smart, don’t drive aggressively. There’s many different things drivers can do to help us out.”
