DISD Approves Changes for 3 Schools Named After Confederate Leaders

(WFAA)

Dallas, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – Right around the same time the Robert E. Lee statue was being removed from its nearly century old location in Oak Lawn, The Dallas School Board voted to move forward with renaming three schools named after Confederate leaders.

The board last night approved the changes:

Robert E. Lee elementary will be called Geneva Heights Elementary, for the plot of land on which the school was built.

Stonewall jackson elementary, on e. mockingbird lane, will change to mockingbird elementary .

And, William L. Cabell Elementary, a Confederate military officer and former Dallas mayor, will change to Chapel Hill Preparatory.  There was mixed reviews for and against each change from parents and former students:

WFAA reports, Robert E. Lee Elementary parent Manuel Rodriguez liked the change.  I’ve been here so many years, my grandkids are coming here, I think it should stay like that. It doesn’t bother me.”

“Well, I don’t like it because it’s a history name for the school. But if they need to change, I can do nothing about it,” said parent Mayra Nagera.

Tiffany Arnold, who attended Stonewall Jackson and now sends her kids to Robert E. Lee, doesn’t like the idea at all.

The changes go into effect next fall.

In other DISD board news, trustees considered a resolution aiming to address racial, socio-economic, and educational equity.

District 2 Trustee Mike Koprowski summed up the resolution in on Twitter:
