SMU Law Students Forego Spring Break to Help Detained Immigrants

KARNES (WBAP/KLIF News)  A group of law students from SMU won’t be at the beach this spring break, but will still be getting their feet wet. They are providing legal services to some detained immigrant women and children at risk for deportation. Professor Natalie Nanasi will head up the group of eight at Karnes City Family Detention Center near San Antonio. She says these immigrants are different than others because they’ve demonstrated fear of returning to their home countries. They are currently protected by the government until the determination can be made on whether they qualify for asylum here. Most of the detained women who will be getting help are from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
